Candles - An Unexpected Business! 08/18/2010
My story is simple….I was not looking for a candle business or ANY business in 2004. In fact, I was frustrated and sick of all the scams online and had enough. Too many scammers took my money and had a good life. That was not going to happen again. I was ready to shut my computer off for good when I happened to read a small ad about a new clean burning candle. Were they serious? I didn’t believe for a minute there was a candle on the planet that didn’t leave a black nasty mess, spit wax all over my table, tunnelled down the middle of the candle plus a fireball at the end of the wick! I remember thinking these people must be joking! But I’m a candle lover and decided to put this new candle to my own test. I was going to show whoever placed the ad they were wrong. So off I went to place an order. I think at the time I was looking forward to being right. About a week later I received my parcel with one jar candle, a dozen votives and one of the bath bars. I always enjoy getting parcels in the mail so this was not so different from anything else I’ve ordered by mail. Something was different about this package. It actually smelled GOOD! In fact, it smelled like someone had mailed a hot apple pie. After opening my parcel, I was very surprised at the scent of this candle. It really did smell like the real thing….Hot Apple Pie fresh out of the oven! I popped off the lid and couldn’t take my nose out of the jar. My co-worker could smell the scent too and asked what I had in my hot little hands. He smelled it and immediately asked if he could buy the jar candle. Hmmm, that was easy. But he had to wait until I found out a few things first like how much I should charge for this jar candle. I had no idea since I had no plans to sell candles. I really had no idea anyone would pay this much for a candle, it was a price someone here in Ontario suggested so that’s the price I went with. The next day I gave him a price of $25 and he said ok, he absolutely HAD to have this candle. I still had no idea how well this candle would burn, so he was going to be my tester. Ok, so I still have some votives to burn, that was fine. The first votive I burned was a mess. I couldn’t understand why it melted flat like a pancake! When I asked another distributor what went wrong, she asked I had used a snug fitting holder. No, I had’t so it was back to the drawing board to test another votive. The second votive was put in a snug fitting holder. The votive burned for close to 15 hours! I was in shock and couldn’t take my eyes off how well the wax burned. The wax liquified while burning, no black around the holder and no spitting of wax. Halleluia, I was a happy candle burner! My first test was a winner. Month Two, my next order came in. It was deja-vu all over again. The parcel arrived, it smelled just as good as the last month’s candle and once I removed the lid, the scent filled the area of my office. Again, my co-worker insisted on buying this candle. Ok, I thought to myself, this will pay for part of my order, so I saved a few dollars. I still have a dozen votives to burn so that was fine too. This little ritual went on for the next 3 or 4 months until finally I decided to try a test to see how popular these candles would be with customers who came into my workplace. I set up a simple display with a few jar candles, votives and cinnamon bun candles. Every day that passed, I would watch customers “drift” to the end of the counter to smell the scents. One day a lady was tempted to take a bite out of one of the cinnamon buns because they looked real and smelled just as good! Thankfully her husband stopped her otherwise it could have been an embarrassing situation for this lady. More and more people asked what type of candles they were and how much. I soon learned that people usually fall into one of four scent groups – baking, fruity, floral and fresh, clean scents. Once I knew what type of scents they liked, I simply opened a jar from one of the family of scents they preferred and I knew I had a sale. At this point, I started to mention this business to a few close friends and mailed them a scent sample and information by email. One friend asked me why I waited so long to tell her! She loved the candles and immediately starting making plans for her own business. Other people on my team were contacts from advertising or posting my story in forums. It took me almost 5 months (resisting along the way) to get serious about becoming a distributor with this company. I was tired of being scammed in the past and wasn’t about to lose any more money on “get rich” programs. Since I took the big step to become a distributor, it’s been a fun, stress free journey for me personally. This business was actually a huge stress reliever in 2005 when my father was ill and later passed away. If not for my family of team partners and customers during this time, I’m not really sure where I would have been. It was such a positive experience that helped me through a difficult time and still is today. My experience with this company and the products has been more than I ever expected. Everything from quality products, family-friendly company, ongoing training and supporting worthy charitable groups. The company wants everyone to succeed and athey go to great lengths to give everyone the highest standards of support. The friendships I have made are a blessing and the journey from 2004 to now is one I will always be thankful for. If you learn anything from my story, whatever business you choose, make sure it’s something you love doing, believe in the company you choose, the products and share in joy of individual success of your team. They are your partners and your friends. P.S. Enter our Free Candle Draw – there’s a New Winner Every Week! Add Comment |
